Academic & Career Counseling

magicstudio-art-34

School can be overwhelming! There’s all this pressure to achieve.

Even when you’re burned out and exhausted, the homework never ends.

You’re stuck in this cycle. You need help, but it feels like you don’t have much of a choice. Sound familiar?

First, let me say it’s not your fault. The system is not set up to help you succeed.

So what can we do? We don’t want to “fix” you so you can DO more. You’re a human being, not a robot!

Fortunately, there are other options, and multiple paths to success.

I’m here to help you discover the resources that are available to you and find your path forward

I can help you take ownership of your life and advocate for your needs, to discover your strengths and set yourself up for success.

Topics include:

  • What are your long-term goals? This could include college, career, hobbies, travel, and family.
  • What makes those goals important to you, and motivates you to move forward?
  • What are your short-term goals? This could include goals for academic achievement, applying for college or jobs, trying something new, prioritizing self-care, or making time for more genuine fun in your life.
  • What are the challenges you’re encountering?
  • How can you set yourself up for success?

What's the difference between coaching and academic & career counseling?

Coaching uses a non-directive approach. Instead of giving you advice and telling you what to do, I mainly listen and ask questions to help you unfold things, connect the dots, and find your own way. (Pick your metaphor!)

Academic counseling at its best is also non-directive, but it involves more problem-solving. I will ask more targeted questions and present you with available options. I will help you develop skills to do research on your own, so you can make an informed decision that feels right for you.

Because coaching and academic & career counseling often overlap, scheduling and prices are the same. As the client, you get to decide which services you’re interested in, whether pure organic coaching or some knowledge-based resources. You can change this at any time during our coaching engagement.

I am a Certified Youth Resilience and Well-Being Coach through the Youth Coaching Institute.

Services

I provide virtual coaching nationwide via Zoom. Sessions range from 30 to 45 minutes in length. Longer sessions tend to work well for people who like more conversation, or when you have deeper content to discuss. Shorter sessions tend to work best for people who prefer to be more direct and to the point, or when you have a tight schedule.

It starts with a free 20-minute meet & greet to determine if coaching is an appropriate fit.

I will ask you:

  • What brought you to coaching?
  • What are you hoping to gain?
  • What kind of support do you need from me, as a coach?

You will have an opportunity to ask me any questions you may have. Then, we will open up the conversation to explore your goals.

For minor clients, a parent or guardian needs to be present for this meeting. I will speak with the parent / guardian and the client separately to determine fit. (Please note that I do not work with minors who are not opting into coaching voluntarily. I only take on clients who are ready, willing, and able to set goals and commit to doing the work to pursue them.)

In closing, we will decide together if my coaching services seem to be a good fit for you at this time. If the answer is yes, I’ll send you a link so you can schedule sessions as you see fit. If the answer is no, I will share my recommendations of other resources that may be helpful.
